What is a flange connection?

September 11, 2015 By Mike Santora 2 Comments

what is a flangeWhat is a flange connection? A flange is a protruding ring, collar or lip at the end of a shaft, pipe or other mechanical component. These rings or collars help add strength, stiffness and stability to connections. In the case of couplings, this non-positive connection of screws inserted through a pitch circle leads to fast and efficient mounting.

Perhaps even more common are flange connections on line shafts. With a flange connection, a whole line shaft can be easily mounted without displacement of the two opposing sides of the system. This coupling connection makes for faster and easier modification, cleaning and maintenance.

Check out these couplings tips for specific installation requirements.
