Step-Flex couplings reduce resonance in stepper motor ball screw assemblies

Mechanical resonance in motion systems can cause, not only unpleasant noise, but can lead to oscillations in the machine that reduce the positional accuracy of the system. This oscillation can also cause the system to take too long to find its correct positioning and further degrade performance. In rare cases where extreme oscillation is present, parts can even be worn down prematurely.

This video from Miki Pulley demonstrates how its Step-Flex coupling can help reduce resonance in stepper motor ball screw assemblies. Step-Flex Couplings are designed to “mechanically tune” the system when a stepper motor is used to drive a linear actuator. The Step-Flex features a combination of HNBR (black) rubber element flanked by smaller, softer laminated (green) spacers. This design dampens oscillations, thereby suppressing resonance. The coupling’s machined aluminum hubs also provide a low moment of inertia.
