How do I prepare for a flexible coupling installation?

To gain some insight on using a rigid coupling to later install a flexible coupling we talked to Bobby Watkins of Ruland manufacturing company to learn more. Here is what he had to say.

Here I’m going to talk about how to use a rigid coupling in order to align components in preparation for the use of a flexible coupling. If, for example, we have a movable component with extremely high angular and parallel misalignment, the entire fixture may be loose. First, we’ll take our two-piece rigid coupling and partially assemble it onto the motor. We’ll work to align our second component such that the shaft can also go into the coupling. Then we’ll begin the installation of the rigid coupling per manufacturers instructions. Once the rigid coupling is fully assembled, the parallel and angular misalignment that we had present in the system before, is now fixed due to the alignment of the rigid coupling.

Now, we’ll go through and begin to tighten down all of the fixtures. Once all the fixturing is tightened down, the system is aligned by the rigid coupling. We then remove the rigid coupling and the system is now prepared for the installation of a double disc coupler.
