Enhanced disc couplings for rotating equipment

Rexnord-XTSR-couplings2

Doing some research today, I stumbled upon this still fairly new product from Rexnord—the new Thomas XTSR52 and XTSR71 disc couplings, enhanced lines of the company’s series 52 and 71 couplings. The new designs offer new and improved features optimized for customer installation, maintenance, operation and safety. They also feature higher torque and lower mass, being optimized for both NEMA/IEC and non-NEMA/IEC drivers.

A look at the enhanced features of Rexnord’s XTSR coupling.

The two new models have one of the industry’s highest torque-to-bore ratios available, with torque on 1 to 16 in. bores reaching up to 2.5 million lb-in. XTRS52 are rated for bores from 1.75 to 12.63 in. and maximum speeds of 3100 to 20,000 rpm (balanced). XTRS71 are rated for bores from 1.63 to 16 in. and maximum speeds of 2700 to 20,000 rpm.

The XTSR52 and XTSR71 disc couplings minimize the coupling mass for a given application. Lower mass translates into less loading on system bearings and seals, as well as easier system balancing.

A white paper from Rexnord highlights the importance of such high torque density, as lighter weight couplings can offer simpler designs while reducing vibration and other problems. As the paper asserts, the highest torque density coupling meets the application’s torque requirements while minimizing coupling weight. The paper then analyzes a variety of couplings from a variety of manufacturers, showing that the Thomas designs were one of only two disc couplings passed all the tests.
