Are disc and bellows couplings similar?

Disc couplings are an excellent choice when selected for the proper application. We asked Bobby Watkins of Ruland Manufacturing to give us some insight on general coupling selection. The following is an excerpt from the disc coupling section of his Webinar, Master Coupling Selection: A Guided Journey by Bobby Watkins.

Disc couplings. The disc coupling is very similar in characteristics to the bellows: high torsional stiffness. The construction’s a little bit different than a bellows coupling, but again, very similar characteristics and very similar applications where you would use one or the other. Max speed again is 10,000 RPM. There’s thin stainless steel washers or wafers if you will. This is one of the couplings available for applications where you need high positional accuracy and stiffness but you’ve got a vacuum application. This is a coupling that we can make a version of for you that will not out gas. Again, you got a vacuum application for high torsional stiffness, this would be the coupling. Again, suitable for delicate equipment requiring precise positioning. Different styles offered for different application needs. There’s a single disc type.
