New Hyde Park, NY — A new series of slit type plastic couplings from Sterling Instrument (ISO 9001:2000+AS9100B Registered Manufacturer) features low cost, UV resistance, voltage and RF isolation. These couplings, identified as the S50TLC… Inch Series are stocked in sizes 13, 19 and 25. This lightweight molded patented coupling can replace stainless/aluminum slit type couplings with low cost and improved operation. There is no windup or backlash or any derating for reversing applications. To insure a tight fit between the shaft and the coupling, a metal screw-to-metal nut design is used and does not utilize threads cut into the molded piece.

These couplings are made of engineered polymer and have stainless steel fasteners. Their bore sizes range from .125″ to .500″ (from 3 mm to 12 mm). They range in length from .710″ to 1.400″ (18 mm to 36 mm). Their maximum temperature range is -4°F to +284°F (-20°C to+140°C).
They can be used in various applications and are especially able to accommodate tight or skewed conections. Quotes, online orders, available stock, and 3D CAD Model downloads are available at our new eStore at: www.sdp-si.com/eStore. SDP/SI offers over 1000 different types of couplings including inch and metric: magnetic, flexible, rigid, oldham, bellows, flexible shaft, spider type, Fairloc® shaft type, helical, slit type, and neoprene flexible type couplings.

New Hyde Park, NY – A new series of magnetic disk couplings from Sterling Instrument (ISO 9001:2000+AS9100B Registered Manufacturer) features no friction or wearing parts, uses no electricity and no magnetic particles to leak. These units, identified as the S50DCM… (inch) and S50DCMM… (metric) Series are stocked in 8 different bore sizes ranging from .1875″ to 1.000″ (5 mm to19 mm).The couplings consist of two opposing disk halves with powerful rare earth magnets. The torque applied to one disk is transferred through an air gap to the other disk. Because of its simple flat design, one can have angular misalignment of up to 3o or parallel misalignment of up to 1/4″ and still transmit nearly full rotational torque.

These 416 Stainless steel couplings incorporate an NdFeB, nickel plated magnet. The hub sections are offered singularly and are offered with or without a keyway and are fastened to shafts with an included set screw. The coupling O.D. ranges from 1.72″to 2.86″ (43.7 mm to 73 mm).
Other features include being incredibly accurate, repeatable torque control, and easy to adjust, easy to apply, smooth with no friction since there is no physical contact between driving and driven parts.

Servo Torque Limiter from R+W America
June 16, 2009 by CouplingTips
Protection of an electromechanical system from torque overload is often assumed to be guaranteed by the current limits set in the drive parameters. But in the case of hard stops, impacts and other situations where overload occurs very rapidly, sufficient energy to do damage often exists in the rotating inertia driving the load.

R+W servo-rated torque limiters are accurate to +/-5% release torque and positively disengage the motor or gearbox shaft in 1-3 milliseconds. Patented pre-loads and a specially designed spring system remove backlash and guarantee a very low profile for higher release torques.

Composite Disc Couplings for the Wind Turbine Industry
June 16, 2009 by CouplingTips
Plymouth, MN – Zero-Max, Inc.announces introduction of its Composite Disc Couplings for the wind turbine industry.
“These couplings withstand extreme misalignment while remaining torsionally stiff and have passed the ‘hell hole’ test at Tehachapi, California Wind Farm,” reports James Motz, member of the Wind Team for Zero-Max.

“The couplings were tested under conditions simulating a 20 year load spectrum of continuous operation. Once fatigue tested, the ‘hell hole’ location was selected for field testing in a wind turbine whereby the coupling would experience wind conditions in excess of 80 mph with continuous wind direction changes. The Zero-Max couplings survived these conditions that put over 50 wind turbines not using our coupling out of commission. The Zero-Max coupling continues to operate uninterrupted at this writing,” Mr. Motz added.
The Zero-Max wind turbine couplings are designed with composite disk packs at both ends of a center spacer. These patented designed disk packs provide the true strength and calculable flexibility of the coupling. The composite disk packs (flex elements) provide a distinct advantage over other coupling component designs by allowing a surplus of parallel and axial misalignment while remaining torsionally stiff through all harmonic ranges of the wind turbine’s oscillating load.
Depending on application, the Zero-Max’s center spacers can be machined out of steel, composite glass fiber or 6061-T6 aluminum. Through the use of Finite Element Analysis (FEA), these center spacers can be engineered to withstand in excess of 70,000 Nm of torque depending on the material selected.
Zero-Max wind turbine couplings have many additional design advantages. The flex elements electrically insulate the turbine’s generator from the gear box, eliminating amperage leak across the coupling thus preventing gear box damage. The coupling protects the generator by transferring lower reaction loads to the generator bearings. Also, the coupling’s composite material withstands all types of environmental elements including temperature extremes from -57 to +121°C and from moisture and chemicals native to wind turbines.

Low-Cost EKC Servo Couplings from GAM
June 16, 2009 by CouplingTips
Mount Prospect, IL, USA – GAM introduces a complete range of low-cost elastomer couplings, the EKC Series, that combine high precision and custom configurability with an economical price. Starting at $34, these couplings contain all the features you would expect with other precision couplings from GAM.

The EKC Series is engineered to minimize space requirements as well as design and installation time. Key features of the EKC Coupling include a single bolt radial clamping hub, star-shaped elastomer element with involute tooth profile, and high shore hardness to ensure zero backlash over the life of product. Utilizing the EKC provides compensation for small shaft misalignments and oscillation resonance is dampened. The couplings are both cast and machined and offer same day delivery.

Marlborough, MA – For micro component applications, Ruland now offers miniature beam couplings. Available with outer diameters of 9.5 and 12.7 mm and bore diameters of 3 mm, the couplings are made from a single piece of aluminum or stainless steel with overlapping spiral cuts.

Ruland’s P-series beam couplings are made from aluminum and cover a peak torque range of 0.62 to 0.9 Nm. Available in set screw style or clamp-style versions, these couplings have zero-backlash and can accomodate angular misalignment of up to 3° and radial misalignment of up to 0.2 mm. For increased torque capacity and corrosion resistance, the beam couplings are also available in stainless steel.
Beam couplings are part of Ruland’s complete product line which also includes shaft collars and rigid couplings with precision honed bores, and five types of zero-backlash motion control couplings including bellows couplings, oldham couplings, jaw couplings and miniature disc couplings.
