Full-Torque Nut Couplings

Hydraulic leaks are a drain on budgets and system productivity, but a new generation of threaded couplings is ready to combat them.

Available on MegaCrimp® couplings for wire-braid hose and GlobalSpiral® couplings for spiral-wire hose, Full-Torque Nut couplings round out the complete Gates hydraulic fitting line.

2gates-ftn.jpg

Its many advantages include:
•Stronger than staked-nut fittings
•Patented design with premium quality machined components
•Maximum durability
•Consistent sealing force for leak protection
•Larger nut for easier wrench access
•TuffCoat™ plating that performs at a 500 percent improvement over SAE standards for rust and
corrosion resistance
•Available in metric sizes only (female fittings)
•Meets global ISO standards and specs in all drop sizes

JIC couplings have gained wide international acceptance for their versatility and relatively inexpensive price points. With angled threads that form a seal, they connect to English and Metric ports. And because they don’t depend on an elastomer O-ring, fluid compatibility poses no problem.

What’s the catch? Threads crushed during tightening and damaged by vibration and shocks during equipment operation create the potential for leak paths. Whether ORS or JIC, any threaded connection can leak when not properly torqued.

The Gates Full-Torque Nut coupling solves this problem. Its premium quality machined components and consistent sealing force offer unsurpassed resistance to cracking. A patented process allows Gates to manufacture couplings for wire-braid hydraulic hose assemblies comparable in cost to traditional staked-nut designs.

When a staked-nut coupling is tightened, forces go in all directions. The Full-Torque Nut coupling has a 90° shoulder. When torqued, force is applied directly downward onto the sealing surface, lessening stresses on coupling components and reducing the potential for leaks.

While ORS couplings have been taking the lead in the leak-free race, there’s a new option for a relatively inexpensive, leak-free solution – the Gates Full-Torque Nut coupling.

Stainless Steel Servo Insert Coupings

March 10, 2009 by R. Nelson Parrish

Bensenville, IL - Stainless steel SERVOMAX couplings from R+W feature a highly chemically resistant elastomer element that is press fit between two precision machined coupling halves, giving it zero backlash and guaranteed concentricity. The inserts, available in four different Shore hardnesses, depending on the damping and torque rigidity required, are heat treated within the precision machined hub, removing inconsistencies in the surface area in contact, and significantly improving rotational positioning accuracy as the result. These servo couplings exhibit a very high torque density and very smooth running due to the tight concentricity tolerance in the overall design.

The RoHS compliant SERVOMAX couplings in stainless steel are ideal for packaging, food processing, semiconductor, and other applications requiring frequent cleaning or exposure to the elements. They are available in 9 different sizes with torque capacities from 2Nm (17.7 lbs/in) to 2150Nm (19,027 lbs/in) and can accept English or metric bores, with or without keyways, in the 3mm to 80mm range.

Improved Clamp Design for Flexible Beam Couplings

March 5, 2009 by R. Nelson Parrish

Marlborough, MA - Ruland Manufacturing Company has introduced a new clamp design for its zero-backlash flexible beam couplings. The couplings now clamp with a single screw on each end, which eases installation, and are balanced for increased rpm capability.

The beam couplings now feature both a radial and cross-cut to enhance surface contact with the shaft. This increases holding power and while eliminating the need for the additional screw used in the original design. Balancing is achieved by the removal of material opposite the screw. Better balancing allows for increased speed with less vibration. This can both extend the life of the coupling and decrease settling time in stop and start applications such as machine vision systems.

Ruland offers two series of zero backlash flexible beam couplings with distinct performance features suitable for different types of applications. The couplings are machined from a single piece of aluminum and feature multiple spiral cuts. The multiple cut design provides higher torsional stiffness and torque capabilities, and greatly reduced wind-up when compared to a commodity type single beam coupling. The multiple spiral cuts also allow the couplings to accommodate angular misalignment, parallel misalignment, and axial motion.

Offered in aluminum for low inertia or stainless steel for higher torque and added corrosion-resistance, beam couplings are available as standard parts in twenty different body sizes with outside diameters ranging from 3/8″ (10mm) to 1 1/2″ (38mm) and bores from 3/32” (2mm) to ¾ “ (19mm). Ruland beam couplings conform to industry standard lengths, fitting in confined spaces and allowing for easy retrofits in existing equipment. Special designs, cut patterns suitable for specific applications, keyways, and threaded bores are also offered.

Beam couplings are part of Ruland’s complete product line which also includes shaft collars and rigid couplings with precision honed bores, and five types of zero-backlash motion control couplings including bellows couplings, oldham couplings, jaw couplings and miniature disc couplings.

High Performance from Miniature Disc Couplings

March 5, 2009 by R. Nelson Parrish

Marlborough, MA – Ruland offers miniature disc couplings both in single and double disc styles. Disc couplings are high performance motion control couplings with zero-backlash, excellent speed capabilities up to 10,000 rpm, strength and torsional stiffness characteristics, as well as low inertia for today’s highly responsive systems. Disc couplings are often used in servomotor and lead screw applications. In addition, two single disc couplings are often used in tandem when greater misalignment or a longer distance is required such as on gantry systems.

Disc couplings are an assembly of two black anodized aluminum hubs, multiple flat stainless steel disc springs to transmit torque, and a center spacer for double disc styles. The thin discs allow for a substantial amount of misalignment between shafts, while remaining rigid under torque loads. Parallel misalignment is accommodated by the double disc style or by two single disc couplings used in tandem.

Double disc styles are available with either an anodized aluminum center spacer or an electrically isolating acetal center spacer. Both disc couplings types are offered in clamp style and set screw style, with standard outer diameters from 15mm to 57mm, and bore sizes from 1/8″ to 1 1/4″ in the inch series and 3mm to 30mm in the metric series. Couplings with different bores sizes including mixed inch and metric are available.

Disc couplings are part of Ruland’s complete product line which includes shaft collars and rigid couplings with precision honed bores and five types of zero-backlash motion control couplings: beam couplings, bellows couplings, oldham couplings, curved jaw couplings and miniature disc couplings.
